In November 2011, Esa-Pekka Salonen was awarded the prestigious Grawemayer Award for his Violin Concerto, a piece he completed back in 2009, during the very last weeks of his 17 years as music director of the L.A. Philharmonic.

Esa-Pekka Salonens Violin Concerto is a thrilling piece written for Leila Josefowicz. Salonen conducted the premiere on April 9, 2009 in the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles. In an interview Josefowicz described the work:
