Vijay Iyer: “I do try to push myself instead of doing safe things”

When speaking of him, articles title “The Wizard of Jazz”, “The inventive Vijay Iyer” or “Iyer is unique in Jazz”. His success is worldwide and he is widely acclaimed by music critics. We are pleased to welcome Vijay Iyer for the very first time on December 13 in the Salle de Musique de Chambre. I had the pleasure to have a little chat with him, talking about Luxembourg, his music and a few more other things.

Gilles Somers est un ami de longue date de Quincy Jones. Pour le blog de la Philharmonie, nous l’avons invité à nous raconter comment son chemin a croisé celui du musicien-producteur-compositeur et arrangeur américain, qui sera, rappelons-le, à la Philharmonie (dans le cadre de l’Année Internationale de la Forêt 2011 au Luxembourg) avec l’Orchestre National de Jazz et Gast Waltzing le 25 juin prochain!

“You’re blessed because you come from the source”

Diese Worte des grossen Edward Kennedy alias “Duke” Ellington sagen schon recht viel über Adolph Johannes Brand aus. The “Duke” hatte nicht lange gebraucht, um das ausergewöhnliche Talent des jungen Brand zu erkennen, als dieser im Zürcher Cafe Africana vor ihm auf der Bühne spielte. Er nahm Brand sofort unter seine Fittiche und lud ihn vier Tage später in sein Pariser Studio ein. Das war 1963. Das Resultat (“Duke Ellington Presents the Dollar Brand Trio“) etablierte den Südafrikaner “Dollar” Brand als einen der weltbesten Jazz-Pianisten, der in die grossen Fussstapfen von Ellington und Monk trat.
